Learn more about this magical place in China with our Anhui travel guide.

Anhui Overview

Although Anhui is in the eastern region which is considered the most developed region of China, it is one of the few provinces that has slowly developed retaining most of its natural features. With its mountains, valleys and the Yangtze River, Anhui has an adverse terrain for development. The floods devastate low-lying areas and heavily reduce living standards of the locals, especially compared to neighboring provinces of Zhejiang and Jiangsu who benefit from their proximity to Shanghai.
It is the poverty and development lag that adds to Anhui’s charm. For nature lovers and adventurers looking for new experiences, Anhui has incredible sites. This province is also the homeland of many Chinese celebrities. Similarly to Zhejiang, Anhui attracts painters and poets who share the natural beauty of Anhui with the rest of the world through their works. Today, there are various photographers traveling to Anhui to capture the most beautiful landscapes of China.
Anhui also produces one of the best white teas in China. The tea plants grow at the summits of the mountains of the province where tea leaves have an incomparable gloss and taste.
Due to its location, the province is easily accessible from major southern cities. Shanghai, for example, is only an hour by plane from the Yellow Mountain.

Must-see in Anhui

Anhui owes its reputation to the famous Yellow Mountain, or Huangshan Mountain. Bringing together the standard of beauty among the most beautiful mountains in China, the Yellow Mountain offers stunning views in the midst of clouds while visiting Huangshan.
At the foot of the mountain, ancient villages listed in UNESCO are nestled amidst the beautiful valley. The villages of Hongcun and Xidi, are frozen in time and have typical local architecture consisting of houses with white walls and dark roofs that border a river flowing peacefully.
