The top sites in Xian

As the capital of ancient China for over a thousand years, Xi'an is one of the oldest and major capital in the world ranking among others including, Rome, Athens and Cairo. Having been home to 13 dynasties, it is considered the cradle of Chinese civilization. The tomb of Emperor Qinshihuang with its Terracotta Army is representative of the supremacy of Chang'an, the ancient name of Xi'an. This historical and multicultural center today still contains cultural artifacts that have been left untouched for preservation.

Xian Overview

Xi'an’s history as the capital of ancient China for 1,200 years is not all the city is known for. The city, which has had several names in the past including Chang'an, was rebuilt various times. If there is time available in the tour you can go explore the ruins of the ancient capital.
The city has existed for over 3,000 years and was the capital of more than a dozen dynasties long before Beijing was the capital. In the ninth century, it was even considered the largest city in the world. The walls that protected the city at the time were much more impressive and extensive than those surrounding the ancient city today.
As the ancient metropolis on the eastern end of the Silk Road, the traces of Xi'an ‘ role as a multicultural center remain today. Many different types of people exchanging various products found themselves in ancient Xi’an. This explains the presence of many religions including the following: Buddhism, Islam, Christianity and other religions originating in Persia, among others. Although Buddhism is most popular religion in China there is a large Muslim community located in Xi'an supporting the areas around the Great Mosque.

Emperors'Tombs of Several Dynasties

Having been the host of many emperors, there are many tombs in Xi'an. Although the Mausoleum of the First Qin Emperor is an internationally renowned tomb, many others are present and represent the preservation of ancient burial sites in Chinese civilization. There are approximately 200 graves that are still hidden in the hills surrounding Xi'an. The government is well aware of the importance of these remains, prohibits their opening as the techniques needed to open the tombs may damage the contents. Indeed, three days after the opening of the Mausoleum of the First Qin Emperor, some rich colorful statues disappeared when they were exposed to air. To avoid this, many other tombs will not be opened until a more innovative process of opening tombs is developed.
