Shanghai is a very attractive city in the eyes of foreign travelers. We often hear it on TV, in the radio and even see it in magazines...but Shanghai actually only has 200 years of history. As the economic capital of China, Shanghai is very active and constantly changing. Our Shanghai travel guide will help you get an idea of the city and the activities to have in a trip to Shanghai.

Shanghai Overview

It´s hard to imagine that this bustling and modern metropolis was a small fishing village 200 years ago! The mud flat hosted only a minority of people before Western powers begin to be interested in China from then.
Therefore, the fishing village of Yangtze River Delta has gradually turned to be the door to enter the country and has grown in stature to become one of the most important cities in China and the country´s economic capital.
It is now one of the largest metropolises in the world and one of the largest ports of the country. This is due to its location on the coast, which earned it the name of the city "above the sea", Shanghai today is the economic and commercial capital of China.

Must-see in Shanghai

Some parts of Shanghai have retained their authenticity of the colonial era and thus symbolize the past of the city. The Bund is of course the most remarkable part, with all its European architectures illuminated in the evening. The Old French Concession and Xintiandi also represent the lifestyle of the nineteenth century.
The Yuyuan Garden is one of the few places in the city to offer a bit of greenery. Surrounded by a busy bazaar, this garden is a very good example of the development of Chinese gardens. In the nearby bazaar, enjoy the specialties of the city and do your souvenir shopping.
For shopping or just hang out for a while, do not miss the Nanjing Road and its various shops. By late afternoon, the street is illuminated by giant neon lights from shops and hotels.
Finally, the buildings of Pudong new area await you, glittering on the reflections of Huangpu River. It is best to take the night Huangpu River cruise to admire these huge skyscrapers in Pudong new area and the other old European buildings along the Bund. You can also fill up your evenings with a drink in the bar of the Jinmao Tower, overlooking the illuminated city or attending the show of Chinese acrobatics, very famous in Shanghai!
For those who have a little bit more time, a trip of one or two days to the nearby cities of Hangzhou and Suzhou is worthy.

Best Time to Visit Shanghai

Shanghai is a city with a temperate climate. The four seasons are all conducive to the visit of such a metropolis. But, be aware of its extreme temperatures; it is very hot in summer and very cold in winter. Fall and spring, which are quite short, would be the best time of year to avoid the temperature peaks.
