Hangzhou Overview

Hangzhou has developed through the construction of the Grand Canal that links Beijing and Hangzhou which make the city one of the most prosperous in China. As one of the seven ancient capitals of China, Hangzhou served as the centers of Wuyue Kingdom in 10th century and Southern Song Dynasty from 1127 to 1279. It was once considered one of the most populated cities in the world and became rich through trading silk, porcelain and paper.
By the Tang Dynasty, poets, artists and writers began to describe its beauty. There is a very famous saying, "In heaven there is paradise, on Earth, there are Suzhou and Hangzhou" as well as, “It must be born in Suzhou, eat in Guangzhou, live in Hangzhou and die in Liuzhou.” Even Marco Polo described the city as "the noblest of cities, the city of Paradise." Today, the city has not lost its beauty and attracts more travelers worldwide. The convenience of Hangzhou was modeled after Boston in its level of development, ease of access through public transportation, natural scenery and cultural artifacts that are preserved.
