Meidaizhao Lamasery residence of Altan Khan

Meidaizhao Lamasery Baotou Inner Mongolia
The Meidaizhao Lamasery is a very well-preserved vestige from the reign of Altan Khan, a descendant of Genghis Khan. Appearing like a fortress prepared to defend itself against the enemy; an entirely different setting appears after the last door. In a maze of narrow streets is a splendid set of Tibetan Buddhist temples and royal palaces.

Residence of Altan Khan

Approximately halfway between the cities of Hohhot and Baotou is the Lamasery of Meidaizhao. It was one of the most important centers of Tibetan Buddhism in Inner Mongolia.
Built in 1575 by the chief Altan Khan, direct descendant of Genghis Khan, the Lamasery served as both residence and the chief temple of Tibetan Buddhism. It even served as a fortress in times of trouble during the Ming Dynasty. In one of the rooms of the temple was also found the ashes of the wife of Anda Khan, Sanniangzi.

Protected fortress

The Lamasery of Meidaizhao is like a city with an enclosure. Narrow walls scale toward a total length of 681 meters around the monastery. There are also guard towers at each corner used to prevent enemy attacks. From the outside, one can view its appearance as that of a fortress, but once through the door, it is a magnificent complex of temples and royal palaces.

Tibetan Buddhism

When Buddhism spreads in China, Tibetans make a variant that takes into account elements of beliefs of the pre-Buddhist religion without incorporating Taoism and Confucianism as the rest of China did. Many Mongols, nomadic people as Tibetans, have therefore embraced the same religion as their distant neighbors.
