Tiananmen Square one of the world's largest squares

Tiananmen Square Beijing Beijing Region
Tiananmen Square is not only one of the largest city squares in the world, but also a symbol of greatness in China. It is the representation of the image of China: broadness. The door, which is located in north of the square, is the first entrance of the Forbidden City, a place once reserved for Emperors. During the last century, Tiananmen had witnessed important moments in Chinese history. Today, it is a symbol or even a place of pilgrimage for all Chinese people.

Gate of the Forbidden City

Tiananmen was named after the passageway that highlights the first gate of the Forbidden City. The word literally means "gate of Heavenly Peace." In fact, the word of men was interpreted as “door” while the character “an” as “peace” and Tian as “heaven”. In Chinese culture, the emperor is the son of heaven. Heaven corresponds to God in the Christian religion. The gate is, thus, an entrance to the abode of power given by the sky, the residence of the emperor.

How can you measure the size of something with greatness and intense significance? The Tiananmen Square covers an area of 109 acres or it may contain up to a million people, but it would not be enough.
Built in 1651 and enlarged to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the People's Republic, Tiananmen Square is the site of historical events so that visitor can really broaden their horizons. To illustrate its cultural significance, there are many historical monuments. For example, in the middle of the Tiananmen Square is the Monument to the People's Heroes. Facing the Forbidden City stands the Mausoleum of Mao Zedong. The Great Hall of the People is to the west and the National Museum of China is to the East. Suffice it to say that this place lives up to its reputation as the symbol of the greatness of the country and its political dealings. It is around this place that major decisions are made on behalf of 1.3 billion Chinese citizens. Tiananmen Square is also a witness of the modernization of China. This unique place is both a symbol of imperial dynasties and the Communist People's Republic. This explains why traditional Chinese buildings stand alongside Soviet buildings and new constructions.

Place of Peace, "Sensitive" Site

Tiananmen Square, or literally “the gate of Heavenly Peace”, was named after the title given to the first gate of the Forbidden City. in the hope of finding peace and prosperity, its name may be ironic as the square became the witness of wars as early as 1900 during the siege of Beijing by the alliance of eight nations.

This gate is famous throughout the country to be the forum where Mao Zedong proclaimed the 1st of October in 1949, as he marked the founding of the People's Republic of China and hoisted the first flag of the new China. Mao also demanded the expansion of the site in 1959 so that it can accommodate more than one million people during national celebrations.
Since the end of the imperial dynasties, it has become the scene of the most important events in Chinese politics. In a word, Tiananmen has become the witness of the most important Chinese contemporary events.

Must-see in Beijng

As one of the major symbols of China, Tiananmen Square is one of the most visited Chinese attractions. Major events are still required to be conducted here. Every day, thousands of tourists come here to witness the raising of the national flag.
