The Silk Road consists of many roads. One of them, used for transporting horses and tea, allowed for the commercial activities between Tibet and the South-west of China. This road then passed through the small town of Shaxi. The town was affected by the trade and thus developed into commercial hub. Today, this unique atmosphere can be felt in the cobbled streets of Shaxi Ancient Town.
Too far from the major cities and roads, the village remains fairly untouched by tourism. WMF recently rated Shaxi on the list of 100 Endangered World Heritage. The town has since obtained grants and assistance from a U.S. team to preserve the cultural and historic heritage of these places while developing the town through ecotourism. Thus, more visitors are coming to this small ancient town while local families are being supported at the same time.
Shaxi is one of the few towns untouched by modernity. Thus, this site could be a paradise for hiking lovers. Hiking off the beaten path leads hikers to the village of Mapingguan. You can only access this village by walking, authenticity and seclusion makes it more mysteries and charming. For enthusiasts of mushrooms, the valley is most interesting. Yunnan is, indeed, renowned for the impressive variety of fungi.
In this region of Yunnan, Bai and Yi live together. Some people from the different villages in the mountains gather in the Shaxi market every Friday.
