Lake Gahai paradise for rare birds

Lake Gahai Gannan Gansu
Lake Gahai, which is the largest freshwater lake in Gannan, became a nature reserve at an altitude of 3500 meters. Wild lives and nature live together in perfect harmony with human presence at their side. Each season offers a different landscape with birds coming winter and breed on the shores of the lake.

This beautiful freshwater lake has a difficult experience. 15 years ago, the lake was nothing like the peaceful water that is admired today. With overgrazing, banks were weeded. The lake began to dry up and the multitude of migratory birds were in danger. With the participation of volunteer guards, environmentalists and Tibetans living in this plain, the lake has been restored to its former glory.

It is now a paradise for environmentalists but also ornithologists and photographers. In this huge nature reserve, there are more than 28,000 birds that overwinter and reproduce here every year. Among them are actually some rare species such as black-necked crane, black stork or the yellow duck.

Lake Gahai is also the largest freshwater lake in this part of Gansu. It is also here that takes its main tributary of the Yellow River, the river Zhaohe source.
