Karakul Lake and Karakorum highway

Karakul Lake Kashgar Xinjiang
It is in an extraordinary landscape that emerges at Karakul Lake, turquoise vastness surrounded by snowy peaks. It is a paradise for nature lovers. To travel here is to enter a brand-new world. The Karakorum Highway which borrows to reach the lake offers beautiful scenery all along the way.

Stunning Views

Located almost 200 kilometers from Kashgar, Lake Karakul, also called Karakuli, is considered as the father of glaciers. Although its surface decreases with time, the landscapes here are stunning. At the altitude of 3,600 meters, the lake is surrounded by mountains and Maztagata Kongur. The latter, in clear weather, reflected on the clear waters of the lake. Both over 7500 meters above sea level, they have formed an incredible backdrop. Tour along the banks of the lake, on foot, horseback, camel or motorbike, we can’t help but marvel at the beauty of the mixture between the snow-capped glaciers, mountains and turquoise waters of the lake.

Karakorum Highway

To get to the lake, you have to take the Karakorum Highway links Kashgar to Islamabad. It took 20 years for it to be finally built in the rugged scenery. Despite this, it still takes 6 hours to reach Lake Karakul from Kashgar. But, just for the scenery all along the route, it’s worthwhile.
The road winds through the Pamir plateau and gorges Ghez where red cliffs arise, snowy peaks, rocky plains, rivers and of course yaks and camels grazing in the pastures. A reservoir on the way offers an impressive contrast between the blue water and sand cliffs. These breathtaking landscapes are really worth appreciating.

A Kyrgyz Experience

To fully appreciate the beauty of it, it is highly recommended to spend the night there. In a Kyrgyz yurt or not, this will avoid the tourist buses that come only for the day.
