Norbulingka Summer Palace of the Dalai Lamas

Norbulingka Lhasa Tibet
As the former summer palace of the Dalai Lama, the Norbulingka is a summer resort. From the 7th Dalai Lama, the spiritual leaders of Tibet came to serve in this place and then gradually converted the surrounding in accordance with the image of its occupants. Former religious, political and cultural center of Tibet, it keeps some functions still hosting many animated festivities.

Origin of Norbulingka

This is the 7th Dalai Lama who visited this famous place in the middle of the eighteenth century. With pain, he came in the summer to rest and enjoyed its pristine areas. A palace was then built to accommodate the first Dalai Lama is soon became the summer residence of the Dalai Lama and his successors. After expansions and renovations, it was improved with potrangs, pavilions, gardens and woods and now turned into a park and open to the public.

Summer Palace and Park

Throughout history, adjustments were made in this site. The garden was enlarged and numerous palaces were built. One can divide the site into two parts. In the east located a huge forest park that hosts the annual Shoton Festival and the West across Palace. The complex extends over 36 hectares! This is a popular retreat open to the public as soon as the 14th Dalai Lama left for India. This huge park is now the largest park in Lhasa, Tibet; it is also located at the highest altitude of the world, 3650 meters above the sea level!

Iconic Place

Frequented in the summer by Dalai Lama during their reign, but also throughout the year prior to their induction, the Norbulingka Palace is the second cultural, political and religious center of Tibet after the Potala Palace. Perhaps this explains why the Tibetan name means Treasure Park. The beauty of the place lies in its culture and history. No wonder Norbulingka earned its inclusion in UNESCO as an extension of the Potala Palace.
