Jokhang Temple the center of the old Lhasa

Jokhang Temple Lhasa Tibet
As the most sacred Tibetan temple, The Jokhang Temple is a place of utmost importance for Tibetan Pilgrims. Without even entering the Jokhang monastery, the roof of the monastery brilliantly showcases color and charm. Everything is finely engraved along with gilded sculptures.

First Place of Worship

The Jokhang Temple is just 1 kilometer away from Potala Palace. Located in the old city of Lhasa, it is the first place of worship for the official religion of Tibet that means the Yellow Hats. This magnificent monastery is as important as the Potala Palace. It is also part of the World Heritage sites, which is inscribed across the Potala Palace. This sacred destination of the faithful is still highly respected. Every day many pilgrims come to pray, not only at the entrance to temples but also in different ways of prayer circling the monastery. It is the ultimate pilgrimage destination for Tibetan Pilgrims.

Sumptuous Tibetan Monastery

Just like the Potala Palace, the Jokhang Monastery boasts unparalleled treasures. The most sacred is the life-size statue of the Sakyamuni Buddha when he was only 12 years old. This golden statue is adorned with glittering jewelry. It is the most sacred relic for Tibetans. It was given as a dowry for Princess Wencheng, when she married King Songsten Gampo. Another Tibetan treasure is located on the roof of the monastery. This golden roof showcases grand splendor in the form of tiles, deer, the Wheel of the Law, Capricorn and all gilding ornamental elements. A real incomparable masterpiece. Some Thangkas are even embroidered with gold!

The Peace Treaty

In front of the main gate of the Jokhang Monastery is a huge monument celebrating the "Alliance between Tang and Tubo." It was built in 823 A.D, when Emperor Tang Muzong and Tubo Tibetan king decided to join forces and make peace. The treaty states that "Tibet and China will keep the borders they currently possess. The entire east is to be considered the country of Greater China, while to the west is the country of Greater Tibet. Now both sides, there will be no hostility, no war, and no taking of territory ". It is therefore a symbol of friendship between the different ethnic groups of the time in the country.

Against Evil

It is said that it was the Princess Wencheng who personally choose where to build the temple in 647 A.D. It believed that the Wutang Lake had an evil aura. In order to counteract the evil influence of the place, they should fill the lake and build a monastery.
