Regarding Lake Namtso, the pilgrimage takes place during the year of the goat in the Tibetan calendar. It should then go around the lake praying and bowing to the ground with each step. It is then necessary for 2 to 30 days for pilgrims to perform a Hajj.
Other faithful, more fanatical, individuals cross the frozen lake in winter to reach one of the islands. They remain cloistered then the rest of the year to meditate and travel the opposite direction after the winter when the water freezes again. It should then be well prepared for the temperatures at this altitude are extreme and there is no food on the island.
