Basum Tso Lake

Basum Tso Lake Nyingchi Tibet
Arising amid snow-capped mountains, Basum Tso Lake boasts exceptional greenery. Wild animals venturing on mountain slopes and the shores of the lake make this site lively. In harmony with this benevolent nature, a monastery was built on a small island in the middle of the lake.

Natural Surroundings

It is 120 kilometers from the town of Bayi where visitors can find the Basum Tso Lake. At an altitude of over 3500 meters, the lake does not lose its majesty. It measures 25 km ² for a maximum depth of 60 meters, but it impresses visitors by its exceptional greenery. Here, the lake is surrounded by green mountains. The plains are not soaring out of sight but the slopes of the mountains plunge directly into the lake of pristine blue waters. In summer, the flowers bloom and nature takes its course after the winter. Bees fly to attack the pollen, butterflies flutter around trees and wild animals come to feed on their hunt. With any luck, it is possible to see bears, panthers, chamois, musk deer or even Tibetan snow pheasants! To appreciate the serenity of the area, you can also enjoy a small cruise over the glittering lake.

Buddhist Retreat

In the middle of the lake, on a rock dating from the Ice Age, a Buddhist monastery was founded in the seventeenth century. Dedicated to the cult of the Yellow Hats and offering worship totems reproduction, many believers consider sacred places. They are likely to meet by the 15th of the fourth Tibetan month, when a festival around the lake will ensue.
