The Bund the historic buildings along the Huangpu River

The Bund Shanghai Shanghai Region
The Bund is the symbol of Shanghai, which is bordered on one side by historic buildings of the 1930s and the other by the Huangpu River. At night, a panorama of incandescent lit buildings within the Pudong New Area is amazingly beautiful. Old buildings of the Bund are true masterpiece.

The Venice of the East

The Bund was named by its composition. Indeed, Shanghai is located on a muddy area as Venice. The word Bund is an Anglo-Indian term for a dock on a muddy sea front, so the name “Venice of the East” is a name that represents the situation of the city.

Historic Buildings of the 1930s

Upon the arrival of British in Shanghai, an area of 50 hectares was reserved on the west bank of the Huangpu River, a portion of the current Bund. Later, more Westerners then grabbed their concessions in this area. During the economic boom of the late nineteenth century, they built banks and trading companies along the river, The Bund, in typical styles of Europe: Gothic architecture, Romanesque Baroque and even Sino-Western are emerging here. Being the "Wall Street" of Shanghai, the Bund has been one of the world´s three largest financial centers in the 1930s. For those who are looking for exotic new world, the Bund will be paradise.

The Bund Today

The Bund remained untouched by the modernization of Shanghai. The old buildings retain their charm and importance in the landscape of Shanghai. But when the People´s Republic of China was established in 1949, the Bund was regarded as a symbol of foreign capitalism. Thus, foreign firms were then expropriated by the Chinese government and most western fund had to leave Shanghai. It was not until the economic reforms of Deng Xiaoping in the early 1990s, as western ideas are inherited to date. Shanghai gradually developed as major economic center. Hoping to restore the past glory of the financial center of the Far East, the former foreign companies are encouraged to move back on the Bund in 1996. With the recent development of infrastructures, the Bund today offers more space for pedestrians. The bund combines the prosperity with its old history, which has attracted millions of visitors.

A Must-see in Shanghai

The Bank of China, Bank of Hong Kong, China Customs, and the Peace Hotel are highly recommended for their remarkable architecture. For example, the building of Shanghai Pudong Development Bank was originally the headquarters of the HSBC bank in the early 1920s. later, it was taken by the government and became the municipal government of Shanghai and finally regain its original function through its new classical style. There are also luxury stores and bars in these splendid buildings. Thus, Bund , in the center of the Zhongshan Dong Yi Road offers a series of luxury stores and trendy restaurants in a very well preserved historical building.

Stunning View of the Bund

If you want to appreciate The Bund from afar, you can take a cruise on the Huangpu River during the early evening or ride in one of the buildings of Pudong area. Needless to say, The Bund offers a magnificent view of illuminated buildings of the new business district.
