Trandruk Monastery the pearl Thangka

Trandruk Monastery Shannan Tibet
The Trandruk Monastery is a geomantic temple used to protect the supposed demon living under the Tibetan soil. Built on the model of the Jokhang, the Trandruk Monastery is reputed for the beautiful Pearl Thangka and precious stones dating back over 800 years.

Geomantic Temple

Trandruk Monastery is one of the oldest temples created by King Songtsen Gampo in the seventh century. According to a legend, the demon Sinmo lived underground of Tibet before the arrival of Buddhism. For control, the Jokhang Monastery was built on his heart, another on his right shoulder and the Trandruk monastery on his left shoulder. This network of twelve geomantic temples would thus control the demon. The monastery had been built on the model of the Jokhang. Respecting its traditional architecture, we find the main temple halls in a huge courtyard surrounded by residences of monks.

Pearl Thangka

This is undoubtedly the great wealth of the monastery, the beautiful Thangkas dedicated to the deity Tara and made from more than 29,000 pearls, almost 2,000 corals, turquoise and about 185 gemstones. This beautiful Thangka has a history of over 800 years old. Another remarkable work is embroidery made by the princess of the Tang Dynasty, Wencheng, who married King Songtsen Gampa. This embroidery depicts Sakyamuni and has been noted with a history of more than 1300 years!
