Tashilhunpo Monastery treasure of Panchen Lamas

Tashilhunpo Monastery Shigatse Tibet
The Tashilhunpo Monastery in Shigatse is the traditional residence of the second Tibetan spiritual leader, the Panchen Lama. This sacred monastery boasts invaluable relics. The copper statue of the Maitreya Buddha may be the largest in the world. Similarly, various stupas of Panchen Lama showcase beauty.

Residence of the Panchen Lama

Located in Tibet's second largest city, Shigatse, this residence is the traditional seat of the Panchen Lama where a different second spiritual leader resided after the Dalai Lama. Covering an area of 300,000 m², the Tashilhunpo Monastery boasts invaluable relics. It was built in 1447 ordered by the first Dalai Lama, Gendun Drub. The name of Tashilhunpo in Tibetan means "Sumeru Auspicious" or "Heap of Glory." At its peak, the Tashilhunpo included 3,000 rooms. It was then the residence of about 5000 monks of the Yellow Hats sect.

Treasures of the Monastery

While strolling through the zigzag paths in the temple, discover mysteries and charm of the monastery. The hall of Buddha Maitreya, Qamba houses a splendid copper statue of the Buddha. This statue, which is the largest of a seated Buddha in the world, is invaluable. With a height of 26.7 meters, its proportions defy all laws. His face is 4.2 meter-high, his shoulder is 11.5 meter-wide and even his hand is 3.2 meter long! It is even possible for a person to stand up in his nostrils!  The materials used to produce this masterpiece are immense: 115,000 kg of copper, 6,700 taels of gold, 32 diamonds, 300 pearls and other precious stones. A diamond in the middle of its forehead is even the size of a walnut!

Stupas of the Panchen Lama

The residence of the Panchen Lamas also includes the monastery of Tashilhunpo where most of them were buried. We have even found stupas from 5th to 9th Panchen Lama.
