Mount Tai sacred mountain of Taoism

Mount Tai Tai'an Shandong
Located in Shandong, Mount Tai is the largest of the sacred mountains of Taoism. The emperors of past would climb the mountain to pray for Heaven and Earth and thus prove their divine mandate. Tao pilgrims would follow suit and trek to the top. In addition to the followers of Taoism, this wonderful landscape has been an inspiration to many painters and poets.

Imperial Mountain

From the very first emperor of China, Qin Shi Huangdi, Mount Tai has been considered a mandatory stop for the emperors to prove their divine mandate. After their access to power, they had to make the journey to Taishan Mountain and climb to the top to pray for Heaven and Earth. However, they did not climb on foot. Horse or sedan chair was there to help.

Taoist Temples

Taishan Mountain is the birthplace of Taoism, the first of the five sacred mountains of China. Taoist temples punctuate the route. Most of them are devoted to the goddess Bixia, Princess of blue clouds. Bixia temple, not far from the summit is one of the most beautiful of Mount Taishan, lost in the heart of the cloud. For those unable to hike the entire way, minibuses and cable car give access to the summit and the most beautiful views on the region. If possible, it is preferable to follow the same passage that the emperors took several centuries earlier. That way you can view spectacular panoramas throughout the climb.
