Flaming Mountains furnace of China

Flaming Mountains Turpan Xinjiang
Located in the north of Turpan, the Flaming Mountains are the hottest places in China, a real furnace. The red sandstone gives the impression of flare in contact with rays of light, all under a blazing sun. It offers stunning view despite the sweltering heat of the premises.

Furnace of China

10kilometers east of Turpan (or Turfan) located one of the hottest places in China, Flaming Mountains. Due to the movement of tectonic plates about 50 million years ago, these mountains are a real finance that extends over a hundred kilometers wide and 10 kilometer-long. In summer, the temperature can easily reach 50°C in even shaded areas. Suffice to say that during these times when the sun is at its hottest point of the day, the heat is unbearable. For those who want to ride in the mountains, you have to get there early in the morning, before the sun may heat the soil. This is the only time of day to possibly set foot on the Flaming Mountains.

Flaming Sandstone

In a Uighur legend, the mountains would be the body of a dragon that a hero had managed to kill after three days and nights of fighting. Injuries afflicted during the battle created the eight valleys where rivers flow today. The red color of the mountains is the blood of the dragon. It’s just a legend. Or you can simply listen to the scientists that the mountain is just red sandstone. It is sunlight reflecting off the rock that gives the appearance of mountains. So get there at the right time of the day to experience this magnificent phenomenon.

Journey to the West

One of the great classics of Chinese literature, Journey to the West, made the Flaming Mountains famous. Indeed, during the journey of the monk, Xuanzang, from India to China, he was confronted with these mountains. He managed to cross with the help of his friend, the Monkey King Sun Wukong, who extinguished the furnace using a magic fan.
