Emperor Qin's Terracotta Army tomb of first Qin emperor

Emperor Qin's Terracotta Army Xian Shaanxi
The Terracotta Army is the crazy project of Qin Shi Huangdi (the first Emperor of China). The buried army of 6,000 terracotta warriors is one of the biggest historical discoveries in the world, which was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

A Megalomaniac Emperor

Throughout history, Qin Shi Huangdi had established the first unified feudal empire in China around 200 B.C. Before unifying the country, this man had already planned his future and had started the construction of his tomb! It eventually took 39 years for the 700,000 workers from various provinces of China to finish this huge burial. Qin Shi Huangdi insisted that his soldiers protect him until death. So he duplicated his entire army as terracotta statues. So thousands of statues of soldiers have been created, as well as horses, chariots and weapons-all full size! The unexcavated tombs could be an entire city! According to the literature on the project, the emperor would have shaped palaces, mountains, seas and even the sky with stars. He also developed an underground river made entirely of mercury. This would explain the high mercury content of land covering the tomb.

A Buried Terracotta Army

After the death of the emperor, the tomb was built under a huge mound and was closed. The first terracotta warrior was discovered in 1974 by local farmer. Excavations began and some 6000 statues were unearthed and visible on the site of the mausoleum. Terracotta Army contains more than 1800 soldiers, 130 chariots with 520 horses and 150 cavalry horses. There are still thousands of statues buried but it will take some time before the entire tomb is explored.

Realistic Terracotta Statues

With careful observation at size of the terracotta army, you will notice that none of them are similar. The facial features are extremely thin to the point where we believe that every soldier came to ask the artist individually to create a statue in his own image. Quality paintings and work were not only on the soldiers, but horses, chariots and weapons.

As a masterpiece in the history of Chinese sculpturing, this site is thus an invaluable testimony. The Mausoleum of Emperor Qin was declared as World Heritage Site by UNESCO since 1987, gaining the reputation as the eighth wonder of the world
